Darshan Shah is an Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Bombay, where he heads the ‘BiOME’ lab established to further research and teaching in Biomechanics, Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Engineering. With a strong background in engineering design, coupled with an avid interest in human anatomy, he delves into understanding the functioning of the human body from an engineering perspective, in close collaboration with surgeons, clinicians and the medical industry. Darshan is an alumnus of IIT Bombay, where he graduated with a dual degree (BTech, MTech) in Mechanical Engineering. He went on to pursue further studies in Bioengineering at Imperial College London, UK, where he completed a second Masters (MSc), a PhD and a year of postdoctoral research. Following this, he spent a couple of years at the Institute for Orthopaedic Research and Training, Belgium – an interdisciplinary lab affiliated to the faculties of engineering, anatomy and orthopaedics – supervising a team of surgeons and engineers on translational orthopaedic projects, before coming back to the current faculty position in India.
